All pupils and staff walked around Clonmel town today to find interesting heritage sites. We started with Anne Street, a beautiful example of Georgian houses. We especially liked the round headed doors of different colours and their fanlights and their cast-iron bootscrapes! Next we looked at the Quaker's Burial Site and observed that all the headstones are equal. Then we went to Short Street and explained how Cromwell's army had been trapped here. After that we visited the Main Guard, which used to be a courthouse. We then walked to Dowd's Lane to see where all the apples used to be unloaded and processed for Bulmers. We visited the beautiful Franciscan Friary and we admired the mural opposite depicting the monks surrounded by nature. We then visited Clonmel Courthouse. We also looked at Hearn's Hotel and learned about Bianconi setting up the first public transport system using 'bians' (a horse and car). We noticed that the doors of the hotel look like stable doors. Finally we stopped at the cinema and peered in to see the North East Tower, a lookout tower part of the town wall. It was a lot of walking on a hot day, but fascinating to learn all about our local history!
