Creative Schools

We are a creative school. This year we are undertaking many creative projects to enhance our creative skills and embrace ownership over our artistic and dramatic selves! We are exploring a wide variety of areas.
We are currently participating in the Creative Clusters initiative. Here are some of the creative activities we have pursued so far this year.
In December 2024, renowned local poet Eileen Acheson visited our school over three weeks and guided our classes in a series of poetry workshops. Each class created a collective group poem and presented them at the end of the three weeks. Poetry is a fantastic medium for exploring self expression, creativity and language development.
In January 2025, accomplished local musician Ricky of Big Bang Drumming visited our school to teach and guide the children in the development of drumming skills. The whole school were involved from Junior Infants up to 6th Class. The children discovered how to play a selection of different rhythm patterns and rhythm games. They explored how to play We Will Rock You. They also mastered how to play the drums while accompanying songs such as Uptown Funk. When children play and listen to music they are training their brains to recognise patterns, improve focus and coordinate movements.
In February 2025, local animator Mike Byrne visited our school for two days to teach stop motion animation. All children participated from Junior Infants to 6th Class. The children planned a storyboard, created characters using modelling clay and used the free Stop Motion Studios app to photograph and produce their animations. They finally used the free Inshot app to add sound effects and music to further enhance their videos. All the animations created are available to view on Mike's Youtube channel Let's Animate With Mike.
Artist Brigid Mannion is teaching the children how to make and work with a phenomenal art medium, cob!
Amy Hill and Tara Power have been exploring dramatic techniques through feeling and expanding the element of performance throughout the year during our drama classes.
Artist, Máiread Loughnane and the children are currently working on a Wellbeing Wall on our school shed. A wide variety of techniques are being used and this will be a one of a kind sensory stimulating 3D tactile wall upon completion.
We are very lucky to be part of this initiative and our creative juices are thriving since it began.
